Tensioned membrane structures

If you want to shade, cover or expand your buildings with special, characteristic shapes in a short time than besides wooden, stone, metal and glass materials another proper material to use is the textile shell (membrane).

Architects and designers like to use PVC and PTFE membranes, thus they can design the roof structure of stadiums in a desired shape with low costs and these materials can be successfully used in almost any landscape or architectural environment, as well as in any weather condition.

The PVC material is a high tensile strength industrial grade textile, coated with PVC on both sides. The PTFE (polytetra-fluor-ethylene) is fibreglass coated in Teflon, with high tensile strength.

The manufacturer’s warranty guarantees that structures made out of these materials have a long lifespan even under high stresses.

Other advantages of tensioned structures are the short manufacturing and installing times, excellent price/value rate, and the high specific, tensile and transverse strengths.

Both of these materials have a lifespan equal to alternative covering materials like trapezoidal sheets or polycarbonate (in the case of PVC - 25 years and for the PTFE - 40 years) and in case of wear-out their replacement is cheap.

Both materials have class B1 fire hazard classification, there are no burning droplets. Their smoke production is class s1 d0.

The surface of the material is UV-resistant and coated with dirt repellent solution, thus especially the PTFE surface will not become filthy and it preserves its colour/whiteness for a long time.

The PVC and PTFE materials come in different thicknesses. The thickness of the material is given by the results of static tests. The industrial grade textiles are welded with high frequency or with heat welding.

The principal point in tensioned membrane design is the determination of the right tensioning method and equipments. Welded membrane panels have in individual project design, considering the characters of the relevant support structure. Another important factor is the fast and economical on-site assembly.

The industrial textiles are more suitable for covering larger areas such as buildings, stadiums, but they can successfully be used with smaller areas as well.

The advantages of using PVC and PTFE membranes:
  • any form can be executed from both material types
  • m2 weight of these materials are a lot less (650 g/m2 – 1550 g/m2) than that of alternative covering materials and while the tensile strength and resistance is a lot higher
  • due to the lightweight of materials you need considerably less concrete for the foundation that supports the structure
  • due to the lightweight of the materials you need less supporting beams and the elements of the main support structure are lighter
  • the membrane structure can be adapted to any load of snow or wind
  • excellent for shading techniques:
    • it has excellent light transmission and reflective properties
    • the material is treated with UV coating
    • waterproof
    • good acoustic insulation
  • easy to maintain and to clean
  • in case of damage individual elements can be easily replaced at low costs
  • the installation costs of PVC and PTFE membranes are low:
    • the individual elements are easy to move
    • their installation is simple and fast
    • the use of crane or jack can be avoided during installation
